Xie Lingyun composed the stele inscription, and Zhang Ye wrote the preface. Zong Bing further erected a stele at the temple gate. Earlier, when the Master practiced the Way on the mountain, famous literati such as Liu Yimin, Lei Cizong, Zhou Xuzhi, Zong Bing, Zhang Ye, and Zhang Quan, along with the śramaṇas Master Huiyong, Huichi (the Master's younger brother), Daosheng, Tanshun (who studied under Kumārajīva), Huirui, Tanhang, Daobing, Tanxian, and Daojing (all disciples of Master Huiyuan), as well as Buddhayaśas (a native of Kaśmīra) and Buddhabhadra (a native of Kapilavastu), constantly traveled and dwelled together. The world called them the 'Eighteen Worthies of Mount Lu'. In addition, together with one hundred and twenty-three monks and laymen, they formed a society to recite the Buddha's name, having Liu Yimin compose the pledge to vow mutual ascent to the west. Xie Lingyun, relying on his talents, was arrogant toward others, yet upon meeting the Master once, he was awed and completely subdued in his heart. For the Master, he excavated two ponds on the east and west sides and planted white lotuses, which gave rise to the name White Lotus Society. Lingyun once sought to enter the society permanently, but the Master halted him because his mind was distracted. The Master once invited Tao Qian by letter. Qian replied: 'If you permit me to drink wine, I will come.' The Master permitted it, whereupon he went to visit, but suddenly knit his brows and departed. The Master's compositions, such as the *Faxing lun* (Treatise on the Nature of Phenomena), the *Bubai wangzhe lun* (Treatise on Not Bowing to Rulers), as well as poems, prefaces, inscriptions, and eulogies, totaled ten scrolls, titled the *Lushan ji* (Collection of Mount Lu). (Chan Master Baiyun Duan brought a transcript from Mount Lu to Yue; meeting Vinaya Master Zhao, he gave it to him and enjoined him to carve the printing blocks. Master Zhao wrote a preface for it, which stated: 'Lord Wang of Jinggong said: "Among the people of Jin, no one composed writings equal to Master Huiyuan."' )
