In the tenth year, Master Huiyong of Xilin on Mount Lu manifested illness. Suddenly joining his palms and facing west, he said: 'The Buddha has come!' Sitting peacefully, he passed away. An extraordinary fragrance ceased only after seven days. Master Huiyuan resided at Donglin for thirty years, and Master Huiyong's stay at Xilin was just as long. When General Pacifying the South He Wuji arrived at Tiger Creek, he summoned them. Master Huiyuan, who had long maintained a great reputation, was accompanied by a hundred followers, with lofty words and splendid discourses, displaying an impressive demeanor. Master Huiyong, however, with a patched robe reaching only halfway down his shins, carrying his tin staff and holding his alms bowl, came drifting along under the pines with a completely composed spirit. Wuji sighed and said: 'Master Yong's spirit of pure detachment indeed exceeds that of Master Yuan!' (*Jing* [脛] is pronounced *xing-ding*; it refers to the bone below the knee). In the twelfth year, Master Huiyuan, having long cultivated pure karma, beheld the Buddha's form three times. On the sixth day of the eighth month of this year, sensing the Buddha coming to welcome him, he suddenly underwent spiritual transformation. In his testamentary words, he requested that his corpse be exposed beneath the forest. His disciples could not bear this, so they preserved his whole body and buried him on the Western Peak.
