38.16

太延五年。太子晃被讒。求哀於沙門玄高。為作金光明懺。帝夢先祖讓之。不當以讒疑太子。帝以語崔浩。浩曰。太子結玄高以術致先帝恐陛下耳。帝怒收玄高慧崇縊殺之。高弟子玄暢在雲中。聞師遇害。馳至泣曰。和上神力當為我起。高開眸曰。大法盛衰在於迹耳。但惜汝等行當如我。唯玄暢得南渡。汝等死後法當更興。法進號呼曰。聖人去矣。我何為生。即見高於空中。進問。和上與崇公當生何所。高曰。我往惡處度生以順本願。崇公已歸安養。

In the fifth year of Taiyan, Crown Prince Huang was slandered and sought pity from the śramaṇa Xuangao, who performed the Suvarṇaprabhāsa repentance on his behalf. The emperor dreamt that his ancestors reproached him for suspecting the crown prince based on slander. When the emperor mentioned this to Cui Hao, Hao said: "The crown prince conspired with Xuangao to invoke the late emperors through sorcery merely to terrify Your Majesty." In anger, the emperor arrested Xuangao and Huichong and had them strangled to death. Gao's disciple Xuanchang was in Yunzhong; hearing that his master had been murdered, he rushed to the scene and wept, saying: "Upādhyāya, through your spiritual powers, please rise for me!" Gao opened his eyes and said: "The prosperity and decline of the Great Dharma depend solely on external traces; I only regret that your practice will be like mine. Only Xuanchang will be able to cross to the south. After you die, the Dharma will flourish once more." Fajin wailed and cried out: "The sage is gone! Why should I live?" He immediately saw Gao in the air. Jin asked: "Where will the Upādhyāya and Venerable Chong be born?" Gao said: "I go to evil destinies to deliver beings in accordance with my original vow; Venerable Chong has already returned to Sukhāvatī."
