In the fourth year of the Yanchang reign era, Empress Dowager Gao left secular life to become a nun, residing in the Yaoguang Monastery. At the residence of Duan Hui in Luoyang, the sound of a bell was heard underground; upon excavating, one golden Buddha and two bodhisattva images were obtained. The inscription on the base read: 'Made by Xun Xu, Director of the Secretariat, in the second year of the Taishi reign era of the Jin.' Hui then donated his residence as a monastery. Later, a thief wished to steal these images, and the images called out loudly, 'Thief! Thief!' When people arrived, he was captured. The mother of Pei Zhi, Lady Xiahou, was over seventy years of age; she gave her own body as an offering to the Three Jewels to be a bondservant, serving the monastery by sweeping and sprinkling. Her three sons, Yu, Can, and Yan, all put on servant's garments and followed her weeping, each using cloth and silk to redeem her. Afterwards, she eventually left household life to become a nun, entered Mount Songgao, and only returned after many years. Zhi held the office of Minister of Revenue, and Yu and the others all reached the rank of commandery governor. When their mother approached the end, she left instructions to be buried with the rites of a monk. Can was deeply fond of Buddhist studies; whenever he ascended the seat to lecture, the listeners were convinced by his reasoning and eloquence.
