In the first year of Datong, an imperial edict appointed the monk Daozhen as Supreme Controller of Monks. ○ The First Patriarch Bodhidharma had sat at Shaolin for nine years. Having first transmitted the Dharma and the kāṣāya to Huike, he went to Qiansheng Monastery at Yumen. On the fifth day of the tenth month, he sat upright and manifested extinction. His disciples reverently entombed his whole body at Dinglin Monastery on Mount Xiong'er. The next year, the envoy Song Yun returned from the Western Regions and met the Master walking along lightly, alone, holding a single shoe in his hand. When Yun returned, he spoke of this. His disciples opened the burial vault to inspect it, finding only an empty coffin and a single shoe. (Song Yun served as an envoy to the Western Regions and returned to the realm in the fourth year of Zhengguang of Emperor Xiaoming, which according to the present date was thirteen years earlier. The claim that Yun encountered Bodhidharma on his return is either because he was sent on a second mission, or it was another envoy whose name was erroneously recorded as Song Yun.) Emperor Xiaojing (named Shanjian, son of Dan, King of Qinghe; he moved the capital to Ye, known as Eastern Wei).
