38.61

天平元年。洛州刺史韓賢素不信佛。白馬寺有漢明帝時經函。時放光明。世藏為寶。賢往寺斫破之。未幾州人韓木蘭作亂。一賊自屍中起。以刀斫賢脛斷而死。人謂毀函之報若是其速。

In the first year of Tianping, Han Xian, Inspector of Luozhou, had never had faith in the Buddha. Baima Monastery possessed a scripture case from the time of Emperor Ming of Han, which from time to time emitted bright light and was treasured and preserved by the world. Xian went to the monastery and hacked it to pieces. Soon after, Han Mulan, a native of the province, rose in rebellion. One rebel rose from among the corpses, struck Xian's shin with a blade and severed it, causing his death. People remarked that the retribution for destroying the scripture case had been so swift.
