In the fourteenth year, the Emperor visited the Imperial College to observe the shidian sacrifice. He commanded the Libationer Kong Yingda (a descendant of Confucius) to lecture on the Classic of Filial Piety. He widely summoned celebrated scholars to serve as academic officials. Students who could comprehend one classic were all given appointments. One thousand two hundred schoolrooms were added, and the students reached three thousand two hundred and sixty persons. Even for the garrison encampments and the swift cavalry, erudites were appointed to instruct them in the classics. Thereupon, scholars from the four quarters, including Koguryŏ and Tibet, all sent their sons to enter the school; eight thousand people ascended to the lecture hall. Because teachers' interpretations were varied and numerous, the Emperor ordered Kong Yingda to compile and establish the Commentary on the Five Classics, commanding the students to study it.
