In the sixteenth year, Shi Daoxiang of Lingyan Monastery in Qizhou died suddenly. Reaching the netherworld, he saw Bodhisattva Mahāsthāmaprāpta, who was about to inspect the hells for monks. There was a placard reading: 'The monastic assembly sent Fahiong to the capital to request an inscribed plaque for Lingyan Monastery, taking one hundred bolts of silk and two donkeys. Arriving at the capital, he met an usher-in-waiting who was a donor to Lingyan. For his sake, [the usher] submitted a memorial and obtained the plaque without spending a single copper. Hiong thought to himself: "This plaque was obtained because of me, so thirty bolts of silk ought to be expended [on me]." He then bought silk cloth, incense, medicine, and other goods, privately appropriating them for his personal use. He should enter the Hell of Crushing Beams.' When Hiong heard this, he immediately confessed his guilt and made restitution. Another placard read: 'Someone stole an apricot tree from the monastic grove and cut it into comb-making material. The monastery monk Daoguo picked up a remnant piece of wood that could still be made into a comb, worth eighty coppers. He should fall into the Hell of Burning Fire.' When Guo heard this related, he immediately accepted [the guilt] and returned it. Yet another placard read: 'The novice Daohong made wontons for the assembly and first stole a bowlful to eat. He should fall into the Hell of Iron Pellets.' Hong suffered from mouth ulcers for several years, so he provided an offering for the assembly. Over thirty people were like this. Within seven days, Daoxiang died thirteen times. Seeing the Bodhisattva point out the marks of their sins, he told them to these individuals, who then each made restitution, and the placards in hell vanished accordingly (Record of the Mirror of Monks).
