In the second year, an edict ordered monks and Daoist priests to pay homage to the sovereign. Monk Mingzhan and others defied the edict and refused to comply. The Emperor questioned them, and [Mingzhan] answered: 'If Your Majesty orders us to follow regulations and renounce our robes, we would not dare disobey. But if you recognize that the Great Dharma should be revered, then beneath the Dharma robes monks have no canon for paying homage to the secular.' The Emperor fell silent and stopped. / The Third Patriarch, Chan Master Sengcan, passed away. The master initially visited Chan Master Huike as a layman. After receiving the transmission of the Dharma and the robe, during the Zhou purge of the teachings, he moved back and forth at Mount Sikong for over ten years. At the beginning of the Kaihuang era of the Sui, he resided at Mount Wangong (舒州 Shuzhou), transmitted the Dharma to the novice Daoxin, and traveled freely through the Jiangnan region. In this year he returned to his old abode, and having preached the Dharma to the assembly, passed away standing upright. A stūpa was erected for him at Shangu Monastery. / Monk Daoming of Xiangzhou passed away. Xuanxu, a monk from the same room, was walking in the wilderness at dusk when he suddenly saw a sanghārāma and went to take lodging there. He met Daoming, who appeared no different from during his lifetime. Daoming led Xu to his room. Xu privately wondered at this. Late at night, Ming arose and said to Xu: 'This is no ordinary place; be careful not to go to the hall.' After he left, Xu went secretly to see. The karmadāna chanted to distribute the congee, which all turned into the color of blood. When the congee had been served to all the monks, their entire bodies burst into flame, lasting for about the duration of a meal. When the karmadāna struck the mallet for quiet, the marks of suffering ceased. Xu returned to his lodging in fear. When Ming arrived, Xu asked him about it. He replied: 'This is a hell. Because I took a bundle of the monks' firewood to boil dye and forgot to reimburse them, I have to burn my feet for one year to receive retribution.' Lifting his robe, [Xu] saw that everything below his knees was scorched black. Ming then said: 'If you would kindly buy one hundred bundles of firewood for me to restore to the sangha's permanent property and transcribe a copy of the Lotus Sūtra, I can be freed from this suffering.' Xu agreed. Returning to the monastery, he prepared these according to his words. When he went back to search for the monastery, there was only silence and nothing to be seen (Record of the Mirror of Monks).
