In the fifth year, an edict ordered that all monks throughout the empire who lacked virtue and learning be made to return to lay life. Monasteries were to be retained according to the quota of monks, and the rest were all to be dismantled. Chan Master Dazhi of Fulin on Mount Lu (a disciple of Zhiyi) wore plain white clothes and wept before the Buddha for three days, vowing to sacrifice his body to illuminate the Way. He then went to the Eastern Capital and submitted a memorial saying: 'I pray that Your Majesty cause the Three Jewels to prosper; this poor monk will burn his arm to repay the country's benevolence.' The Emperor respected him and granted permission. Thereupon, wrapping himself in cloth and wax, he mounted a high platform and sat upright, setting himself on fire. After the burning, he entered absorption, and after seven days passed away seated in the lotus posture. From then on, the edict was issued but not enforced.
