In the ninth year, an edict renamed all monasteries throughout the empire as 'bodhimaṇḍas' (daochang). / The Emperor visited Weiyang and summoned the thaumaturge monk Faxi for an audience. One day [Faxi] circled the palace demanding a sheep's head. The Emperor was displeased by this and handed him over to the Minister of Justice, keeping him under strict guard. Yet officials saw him begging in the marketplace daily. His Majesty ordered an investigation; they found only a kāṣāya covering golden chain-links of bone. An edict ordered his image to be sculpted in scented clay. That night, the clay image rose and walked, talking and laughing as of old. His Majesty was amazed by this and issued an edict releasing him from confinement. Not long after, he manifested illness and passed away, being buried at Xiangshan. Several years later, travelers returning from the southern sea saw the master entirely unharmed. Opening his tomb to check, there was only an empty coffin. When Emperor Yang was assassinated at Jiangdu, people finally realized the prior omen of demanding the sheep's head.
