In the fourth year, Shi Zhiyan had initially served the Sui as Palace Commander of the Valiant Cavalry (Huben Zhonglangjiang). He always hung a water-strainer on the tip of his bow so as not to drink water containing insects. At this time, he abandoned his official post and entered Mount Wan to study the Way. He saw an extraordinary monk over a ten-foot rod in height, who said to him, 'You have already gone forth as a monk for eighty-one lifetimes.' His military comrade Lüqiu Yin came to the mountain to seek him out. Seeing the steep, craggy cliffs and hearing the sorrowful cries of birds and beasts, he said to the master, 'Commander, have you gone mad? Why do you live here?' Zhiyan replied, 'My madness is about to sober up; your madness is just breaking out.' His comrade sighed in lamentation and withdrew.
