In the sixth year, Record Keeper Li of Huoze County died. [While alive], he had often gone to Dharma Master Yu's place to listen to the explanation of the Vimalakīrti-nirdeśa and discuss it with others. The master asked him, 'Now as I lecture on this sūtra, what kind of people are moved to listen?' He replied, 'From above people's heads upwards are spirits and gods; reaching higher up, celestial beings in layered ranks fill [the space]. However, when the celestial beings smell the master's breath of wine, they all turn their faces away while listening.' Master Yu immediately repented and drank no more. The ghost added, 'It is not only this assembly alone that moves the celestial beings; wherever there is a Dharma rite, there are none that do not descend.' An imperial order appointed the śramaṇa Xuanzang, master of the Tripiṭaka, to reside at Dazhuangyan Monastery.
