39.60

十二年。尚書虞世南既卒。上夢見之。因詔曰。世南德行純備志存忠益。奄從物化。良用悲傷。昨因夜夢倏覩斯人。兼進讜言。有若平生之舊。可即其家造五百僧齋佛像一軀。以資冥福。以申朕思舊之意（舊唐史）。

In the twelfth year, after Minister of the Department of State Affairs Yu Shinan passed away, the Emperor saw him in a dream. Thereupon he issued an edict stating: 'Shinan’s virtuous conduct was pure and complete, and his intent was set on loyalty and benefit. Suddenly he has passed away, which brings genuine grief. Last night in a dream, I abruptly beheld him, and he furthermore offered candid words, just as in his lifetime. At his home, a vegetarian feast for five hundred monks and a Buddha statue may be provided to aid his welfare in the unseen realm, so as to express My remembrance of an old acquaintance' (Old Book of Tang).
