十三年。詔國子祭酒孔頴達．沙門慧淨．道士蔡晃。入弘文殿談論三教。淨講法華。蔡晃問曰。經稱序品第一。未審序第何分。淨曰。如來入定放光雨華。為破二之洪基。作明一之由漸。故曰序也。第者為居。一者為始。序最居先。故稱第一。晃曰。師言不出脣何所可領。師曰。菩薩說法聲震十方。道士在座如迷如醉。晃曰。野干說法何由可聞。淨曰。天宮嚴衛理絕狐蹤。道士神昏謂人為畜。天情大說合座歡踊○方士秦世英譖法琳所著破邪論訕毀皇宗。勅流益州而亡○有西域僧來善呪術。令人死復蘇。帝令呪飛騎皆驗。傅奕曰。此邪術也。請使呪臣呪之無所覺。僧忽仆地。若為物所擊者。遂不復蘇。又有婆羅門僧得佛齒。所擊前無堅物。奕謂其子曰。吾聞金剛石者。唯羚羊角能破之。汝往試焉。及往見齒出角扣之。應手而碎。

In the thirteenth year, an edict summoned the Libationer of the Directorate of Education Kong Yingda, the monk Huijing, and the Daoist Cai Huang to enter the Hongwen Hall to discuss the Three Teachings. Jing lectured on the Lotus Sūtra. Cai Huang questioned him, saying, 'The sūtra says "Introductory Chapter, First". May I ask of what division this introduction is the first?' Jing said, 'The Tathāgata entered samādhi, emitted light, and rained down flowers; this serves as the grand foundation for breaking the two [vehicles], and marks the gradual path for illuminating the one [vehicle]. Therefore it is called an introduction.
