39.66

十五年。善導法師至西河見綽禪師九品道場講誦觀經。喜曰。此入佛之津要也。修餘行業迂闊難成。唯此觀門速超生死。至京師擊發四部三十餘年。般舟行道。造彌陀經十萬餘卷。畫淨土變相三百餘壁。滿長安中並從其化。有終身誦彌陀經十萬至三五十萬卷。日課佛名一萬至十萬聲者。師念佛時有光明從口出。後高宗朝。賜寺名曰光明云。

In the fifteenth year, Dharma Master Shandao went to Xihe and saw Chan Master Daochuo's bodhimaṇḍa of the nine grades, where he lectured and recited the Contemplation Sūtra. Delighted, he said, "This is the essential ford for entering the Buddha [path]! Practicing other conducts and deeds is circuitous and difficult to accomplish; only this gate of contemplation swiftly transcends birth and death." He arrived at the capital, inspiring the fourfold assembly for over thirty years. He practiced the pratyutpanna-samādhi path, produced over one hundred thousand rolls of the Amitābha Sūtra, and painted over three hundred murals of the Pure Land transformation tableau. All throughout Chang'an followed his transformation. There were those who throughout their lives recited the Amitābha Sūtra from one hundred thousand to three or five hundred thousand rolls, and those who maintained a daily quota of chanting the Buddha's name from ten thousand to one hundred thousand times. When the master recited the Buddha's name, rays of light issued from his mouth. Later, during the reign of Emperor Gaozong, the temple was bestowed the name 'Guangming' (Radiance).
