In the seventeenth year, Chan Master Daoxin, the Fourth Patriarch of Huangmei in Qizhou, was summoned four times but did not rise [to the court]. Thereupon, precious silks were granted to his location to honor his Way. ○ An imperial decree ordered Li Yibiao, Vice Director of the Palace Garrison, and Wang Xuance, Magistrate of Huangshui, to serve as envoys to the Western Regions, journeying through more than a hundred countries. Upon reaching the chamber of Vimalakīrti to the northeast of the city of Vaiśālī, Xuance measured it with his court tablet, obtaining ten tablets in length and breadth; therefore, it was called a 'ten-foot room' (fangzhang). They further ascended Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa and carved a stele commemorating the majestic virtue of the Tang. ○ In the eighth month, Yuanzhou memorialized that at Hongchigu in Changsong County there were five stones with a green substance and white inscriptions, reading: "High Emperor sea emerges many sons. Heavenly Son of Grand Peace, Li Shimin. Thousand-Year Crown Prince, Li Zhi. Seven Buddhas and eight bodhisattvas. Supreme fruit, Buddha-field. Heavenly Son civil and martial. Zhenguan flourishes greatly. Sage extends to the four quarters" (and so forth). In the eleventh month, an envoy was dispatched with jades and silks to Hongchigu to offer sacrifice in thanks for the miraculous omen. (The Old History places this in the Basic Annals; the New Book moved it into the Treatise on the Five Phases. According to the Record of Strange Omens, Li Xiyu, Regional Inspector of Liangzhou, memorialized that Changsong had an auspicious stone with naturally formed writing, totaling one hundred and ten characters. Its summary read: "High Emperor sea rain sons. Li nine kings eight thousand. Heavenly Son of Grand Peace, King Li Shi. Thousand-Year Crown Prince Zhi writes. Yanshan scholars together Lord Shang Wang straight praise writing penetrating thousand ancient great king. Five kings seven kings ten kings. Phoenix-handed talented son, martial civil Zhenguan flourish great sage. Four quarters above below myriad govern, loyalty filial piety do good." An imperial decree sent Liu Cheng, Bureau Director of the Ministry of Rites, riding on courier post to inspect and verify it; all agreed with what had been memorialized.)
