On the fourth day of the eighth month, at Hongchi Valley in Songchang, Yuanzhou, five stones suddenly appeared, all of blue-green quality with white text, forming characters that read: "Supreme Emperor emerges from the sea; many sons; Li Yuan reigns eighty years; Heavenly Son of Great Peace Li Shimin a thousand years; Crown Prince Li Zhi writes; scholars and gentlemen of the Yan mountains rejoice; Great Sovereign Shang Wangtan praises; literature and benevolence surpass a thousand ages; Great King, Five Kings, Six Kings, Seven Kings, Ten Plumed Talents; seven Buddhas and eight bodhisattvas; along with the supreme fruit, field of merit for the Buddha; Heavenly Son civil and military; Zhenguan flourishes; great sage longevity to the four quarters; supreme non-governance shows filial piety; immortal halberds; eight do good." Yuanzhou memorialized this to the court. At first, the characters did not seem very clear, but once the ducal ministers deliberated and verified them, they became resplendently clear. On the xinmao day of the eleventh month, rituals were performed at the Southern Suburbs. An imperial decree dispatched an envoy bearing jade and silk to Hongchi Valley in Yuanzhou to sacrifice to them, stating: "The succeeding Son of Heaven, [personal name], inheriting the vast legacy, presides over the terrestrial realm. Rising early and dining late, never forgetting governance. In virtue, morality, and aligning with propriety, I feel ashamed before former paragons. Heaven has decreed, manifesting auspicious omens and verified portents. The writing is brilliant, the calendar [of rule] shall be perpetual. Having already commended the achievements of the High Ancestral Temple, it further bestows fortune upon my humble self. Reaching to the Crown Prince Zhi, it likewise sends down auspicious omens, recording the Li clan fully upon the stones. Looking up to the night sky, in vain do I name the Great Creation. Considering my own deficiency and unworthiness, my awe and apprehension increase all the more. Daring, on the occasion of the great rite, to offer jade and silk once again, I express gratitude above for the boon of the dark spirits, so as to convey my sincerity of reverent trepidation."
