In the eighteenth year, Cen Wenben became Director of the Secretariat. When Wenben was young, he constantly recited the "Universal Gate Chapter" of the Lotus Sūtra. He once took a boat across the Wu River; the boat capsized, and all the passengers died. As Wenben sank beneath the water, someone said, "Only recite the Buddha['s name], and you will certainly not die." Soon after, surging out with the waves, he reached the shore and escaped. Later, he set up a vegetarian feast at his home. One monk left last and said to him, "The realm is just now in chaos; you fortunately will not participate in the disaster, and in the end will meet with grand peace and attain wealth and nobility." Having spoken, he vanished. When Wenben sat down to eat, he further found two relics in his food bowl.
