39.71

十九年正月。玄奘三藏自西天還。長安留守房玄齡。備釋部威儀。迎置弘福寺。是日有五色雲覆經像上。二月至洛陽。見上於儀鸞殿。問西域事迹。詔撰西域記。所歷百國山川風俗前史所未聞也。詔就弘福寺。同沙門道宣等翻譯。

In the nineteenth year, in the first month, Tripiṭaka Master Xuanzang returned from the Western Heavens. Fang Xuanling, the Regent of Chang'an, prepared the monastic dignities and welcomed him to be housed at Hongfu Temple. On that day, five-colored clouds hovered over the scriptures and images. In the second month, he arrived in Luoyang and was granted an audience with the Emperor in the Yiluan Hall. The Emperor questioned him about the events and sites of the Western Regions and decreed that he compose the Record of the Western Regions. The mountains, rivers, and customs of the more than a hundred countries he passed through were unheard of in previous histories. An edict ordered him to take up residence at Hongfu Temple to translate together with the śramaṇa Daoxuan and others.
