In the twentieth year, in the seventh month, Dharma Master Xuanzang submitted a memorial presenting his newly translated Bodhisattvapiṭaka Sūtra, Prakaraṇāryavācā Śāstra, and others, totaling five works, requesting that the Emperor compose a preface. ○ An imperial decree appointed Chan Master Zhiwei of Fahua to fill the office of Court Gentleman for Free Discussion for the Four Great Masters. Zhiwei's former rebirth was the Vice Director Xu Ling of the Chen dynasty; having heard Zhizhe lecture on the sūtras, he made five vows: first, right mindfulness at the end of life; second, not falling into the three evil destinies; third, taking birth among humans; fourth, going forth from the household as a pure youth; fifth, not descending into the ranks of vulgar monks. Later, he was reborn into the Zhu clan of Jinyun. At the age of eighteen, when he was about to take a wife, he met an Indian monk on the road, who said to him, "Young man, on what account do you wish to violate your former vows?" He then revealed to him his five vows. Upon hearing this, the master did not return home, but went directly to Guoqing [Temple], submitted to Zhāng'ān as his master, inquired about and received the mind-essentials, and thereupon realized the Lotus Samādhi.
