二年。以吐突承璀為左右街功德使。僧道隸焉（姓吐突名璀。官者。璀七罪反）○三月詔曰。男丁女工耕織之本。其百姓有苟避徭役冐為僧道。而實無出家之事業者。所在有司科奏之○詔鵝湖大義禪師入見麟德殿。與諸法師議論。法師問曰。如何是四諦。師曰。聖上一帝。三帝何有。問如何是禪道。師以指點空。法師罔措。帝曰。法師一點尚不奈何。帝問。何謂佛性。師曰。不離陛下所問。帝默契。尚書李翔問。大悲用千手眼作麼。師云。今上用公作麼（師得法於馬祖）○河中府沙門慧琳撰一切經音義一百三卷。詣闕進上。勅入大藏賜紫衣縑幣茶藥。

In the second year, Tutu Chengcui was appointed Commissioner of Good Works of the Left and Right Streets, and Buddhist monks and Daoist priests were subordinated to him (surname Tutu, given name Cui, a palace official; Cui is pronounced qī zuì). In the third month, an edict declared: 'Men's labor and women's weaving are the foundation of plowing and weaving. If any commoners illicitly evade corvée labor by pretending to be monks or Daoists without truly performing the works of the renunciant life, the local officials shall investigate and report them.' Chan Master Dayi of Ehu was summoned by edict to an audience in the Linde Hall to debate with the various Dharma masters. A Dharma master asked, 'What are the Four Truths?' The Master said, 'His Sagely Majesty is one sovereign; how could there be three other sovereigns?' He was asked, 'What is the Way of Chan?' The Master pointed into the empty air with his finger; the Dharma master was at a loss. The emperor said, 'The Dharma master cannot even handle a single point!' The emperor asked, 'What is meant by Buddha-nature?' The Master said, 'It is not separate from what Your Majesty asked.' The emperor silently understood. Minister of the Ministry Li Xiang asked, 'What does the Great Compassionate One use a thousand hands and eyes for?' The Master said, 'What does the present Emperor use you for?' (The Master attained the Dharma from Mazu). Śramaṇa Huilin of Hezhong Prefecture compiled 'The Sounds and Meanings of All the Sūtras' in one hundred and three rolls, went to the palace, and presented it. By edict it was admitted into the Great Canon, and he was bestowed a purple robe, silk, tea, and medicine.
