41.50

述曰。退之與大顛三書具存本集。退之見大顛既其有實。則往來書尺不應無之。一時信筆何能句句精到。謂之妄撰。恐成過論。至若別傳之辭。誠為凡鄙。是不能逃東坡之鑒也。

The Narrator says: Tuizhi's three letters to Dadian are completely preserved in his collected works. Since Tuizhi's meeting with Dadian was indeed an actual fact, correspondence between them ought not to be lacking. In writing freely at a particular moment, how could every single phrase be exquisite? To call them fabricated is, I fear, an overstated argument. As for the wording of the *Alternative Biography*, it is truly crude and vulgar, and indeed could not escape Dongpo's discerning judgment.
