41.57

韓愈讀墨子云。儒墨同是堯舜。同非桀紂。同修身正心。以治天下國家。奚不相說如是哉。予以為辨。生於末學各務其師之說。非二師之道未然也。孔子必用墨子。墨子必用孔子。不相用不得為孔墨。

Han Yu, upon reading Mozi, said: 'Confucians and Mohists both affirm Yao and Shun, both condemn Jie and Zhou, and both cultivate the person and rectify the mind so as to govern the realm and the state. Why do they disagree with each other to such a degree? I consider that disputes arise from latter-day students each clinging to their master's teachings, not that the Way of the two masters was originally so. Confucius would certainly have employed Mozi, and Mozi would certainly have employed Confucius; not employing each other, they would not be Confucius and Mo.'
