In the third year, a person of Shangyuan County in Jinling died suddenly, having been summoned to the underworld by mistake. He saw the First Lord of Tang held in five wooden cangues, exceptionally severe. The commoner was greatly terrified and asked, "Why is the Lord like this?" The Lord said, "I was misled by Song Qiqiu into slaughtering a thousand surrendered troops at Hezhou. I have been accused because of their grievances." The commoner said, "This subject was summoned by mistake and ought to return." The Lord wept and said, "I am imprisoned here. Whenever I hear the sound of a bell, my suffering ceases for a moment. When you return, tell the succeeding sovereign that whenever the bells are struck in the monasteries, they should be made to linger slowly. If he could further cast a bell for me, it would be especially helpful in relieving my suffering." The commoner said, "How may this humble one provide proof?" The Lord said, "I once received the Auspicious Jade Great King from Khotan and concealed it with scented clay within the left knee of the Buddha at Waguan Temple. No one knew of it at the time." When the commoner had returned, he reported this. The Latter Lord personally went to Waguan and opened the knee; he indeed found the jade image. Moved to tears and grieving deeply, he immediately cast a bell at Qingliang Temple, engraving upon it: "Presented for the relief of the Filial and Elevated Emperor Liezu, to deliver him from the netherworld and release him from adversity." With the jade image, he erected a stupa on Mount Jiang.
