In the third year of the Huichang reign, the Emperor wished to eradicate the Buddhist religion. He issued an edict ordering the Left and Right Streets to compile an account of what signs and responses had occurred during times of prosperity and decline since the appearance of the Buddha. Dharma Treasure Master Xuanchang compiled and submitted the *Chart of the Five Fortunes of the Three Jewels*. An imperial decree ordered that all Manichaean monasteries throughout the realm be abolished. Seventy Manichaean nuns in the capital were all killed. Those among the Uighurs were exiled to various circuits, and more than half of them perished.
