In the fifth year, the monk Jixiang of the kingdom of Zhongwen presented the Great Vehicle Sūtra of Incantations. An imperial decree ordered the Tripiṭaka Master Faxian and others to examine and assess it. Xian memorialized: 'This sūtra is written in the Khotanese script, not in Sanskrit; it contains no questioner or assembly listening to the Dharma, and in sixty-five places from beginning to end its text and meaning are unorthodox.' The Emperor summoned Xian and instructed him, saying, 'To allow what is heretical and false to circulate is not the way to exalt Buddhism. It is proper to burn and discard this copy to cut off later doubts.' ○ The Sichuan rebel Li Shun revolted and captured Chengdu. The Emperor sent Wang Ji'en, Commissioner of Palace Proclamations, who attacked and crushed them. He then appointed Zhao Changyan, Participant in Determining Governmental Matters, as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Chuan-Shan Circuit. After he had departed, the eminent monk Maozhen of Mount Emei answered an imperial summons and said to the Emperor, 'Changyan's forehead bears tangled lines, which is a sign of rebellion; he should not be entrusted with Sichuan affairs.' The Emperor was just beginning to regret it when Changyan arrived in Fengxiang, where Kou Zhun was serving as prefect. Kou secretly submitted a memorial stating, 'Changyan enjoys immense fame but has no sons; he must not be entrusted with military power.' When the Emperor received the memorial, he recalled Maozhen's words; greatly astonished, he appointed Changyan as prefect of Fengxiang and summoned Kou Zhun to serve as Participant in Determining Governmental Matters.
