In the seventh year, the monk Qisong of Tengzhou, who had originally obtained the Dharma under Chan Master Dongshan Cong, went to Lingyin in Qiantang, shut his doors, and wrote books. Once they were completed, he entered the capital. He saw Hanlin Academician Wang Su and presented his Fujiao bian (Compendium in Support of the Teaching), Dingzu tu (Chart Determining the Patriarchs), and Zhengzong ji (Record of the Orthodox Lineage). The Emperor read his books, and coming to the line 'for the sake of the Dharma, not for one's own sake,' he praised and admired his sincerity. He decreed that his books be entered into the Tripiṭaka, bestowed [on him] the title Great Master Mingjiao, and sent them to the Grand Councilor Han Qi in the Central Secretariat to show to the Assistant Executive of the Secretariat-Chancellery Ouyang Xiu. Xiu read the text and sighed, saying, 'I did not expect there to be such a man among the monks!' At dawn, he went with Qi to Jingyin to see him, and they conversed all day. From the Grand Councilor on down, none did not vie to invite him; his fame shook the empire. When he went east down to Wumen, Chan Master Dajue Lian composed the Baiyun yao (Song of the White Clouds) to see him off (Shimen wenzi chan).
