45.40

述曰。晁以道言。予嘗怪韓文公歐陽力排浮圖。而其門多浮圖之雄。如澄觀契嵩輩。雖自能傳於後世。而士夫至今喜稱道之者。二公之力也。

The commentary says: Chao Yidao said, 'I used to wonder at Duke Han Wen and Ouyang [Xiu] striving so hard to reject the Buddhists, yet their gates harbored many giants of Buddhism. While figures such as Chengguan and Qisong could certainly pass their teachings on to later generations on their own, that literati to this day take pleasure in praising and speaking of them is due to the power of these two lords.'
