In the fifth year, it was decreed that Tianzhu Guanyin Cloister in Qiantang should ordain one monk each year to maintain incense and lamps (Shangzhu jisheng). / In the seventh month, Ouyang Yingshu, residing in Yingshang after his retirement, associated daily with monks. He thereupon styled himself Retired Scholar Liuyi (Six-One), and named his writings Collected Works of the Retired Scholar (Duke Ouyang's self-composed biography says: 'In my house are stored ten thousand volumes of books, a collection of one thousand volumes of bronze and stone inscriptions from the Three Dynasties onwards, one zither, one chessboard, and I regularly keep one pot of wine; with my single body I grow old among these five things'). Resting his mind and sitting erect, he renounced wine and meat. A few days before his death, he sent someone to a nearby monastery to borrow the Avataṃsaka Sūtra, read up to the eighth roll, and passed away suddenly (seen in unofficial biographies). When Yingshu first entered the government administration, he suffered from frequent illnesses. He once dreamt of coming to a place where he saw ten men sitting in a row wearing caps and robes. One person said, 'How could the Assistant Executive arrive here?' Yingshu asked, 'Are you gentlemen not what the Buddhists call the Ten Kings of the Netherworld?' They said, 'Indeed.' He then asked, 'Does the world's feeding of monks and copying of sūtras really bring benefit?' They replied, 'How could it not bring benefit?' Upon awakening, his illness was completely cured. From then on, he knew all the more to revere the Buddha (Wu Chong, Vice Commissioner of the Bureau of Military Affairs, wrote in the conduct narrative: 'This matter was obtained from the Duke's grandson, named Shu').
