In the sixth year, on the first day of the ninth month, Vinaya Master Yuanzhao of Lingzhi in Hangzhou sat cross-legged and passed away. He was posthumously titled 'Great Wisdom' (Dazhi). The learning of the Vinaya was instituted by the Buddha himself; from Mañjuśrī down, none dared add a single word, just as in the secular realm rites, music, and punitive expeditions issue from the Son of Heaven. From the time the Great Dharma traveled east, the Vinaya was not fully illuminated. Not until Vinaya Master Nanshan of the Zhenguan era under the Tang did someone first compose the *Precept Commentary*, the *Karma Commentary*, and the *Manual of Monastic Practice* to propagate the *Dharmaguptaka-vinaya*. Over four hundred years of transmission, there were sixty commentators; only Master Yankan's *Huizheng ji* thoroughly penetrated the principles. When it came to Master Yuanzhao, he began to draw upon the revelatory teachings of the *Lotus Sūtra* and composed the *Zichi ji* to clarify the tenets of Nanshan. Thereupon, the *Huizheng* and *Zichi* diverged into two schools.
