47.43

述曰。儒家用老莊語其來已久。故不可一旦絕去。至若窮理之妙盡性之奧。高出世表而無所不容者。則無越乎釋氏之書。然儒家欲明理於天人之際。易洪範中庸大學語孟。求之自足。倘涉乎佛經語意。則自違其宗而放肆無歸矣。大哉孝廟之戒。其有旨乎。

The commentary says: The Confucian use of Laozi's and Zhuangzi's words has been practiced for a long time, so it cannot be eliminated overnight. As for the subtlety of exhausting principle and the profundity of penetrating human nature, rising high above the world and containing all things, nothing surpasses the books of the Buddha. However, if Confucians wish to clarify principle between Heaven and man, seeking it in the Book of Changes, the Great Plan, the Doctrine of the Mean, the Great Learning, the Analects, and Mencius is sufficient unto itself. If they stray into the words and ideas of the Buddhist sūtras, they contradict their own tradition and become unconstrained, having nowhere to return. How great was the admonition of Emperor Xiaozong! Did it not have profound purpose?
