48.29

二年天基節。上御延和殿。命佛光法師講華嚴經。皇情大悅曰。自是不同。上問無諍三昧。師曰。天親論解云。無諍者無欲也。有欲則有諍。須菩提不但得無諍三昧而已。又於無諍三昧之人之中最為第一上首。宜之為親製觀音殿記。御書登石。

In the second year, on the Tianji Festival, the emperor presided at the Yanhe Hall and ordered Master Foguang to lecture on the Avataṃsaka Sūtra. The imperial mind was immensely delighted, saying: "This is indeed different!" The emperor asked about the samādhi of non-contention. The Master said: "Vasubandhu's treatise explains: 'Non-contention means absence of desire; where there is desire, there is contention.' Subhūti did not merely attain the samādhi of non-contention, but was also the foremost and supreme leader among all who attained the samādhi of non-contention." It was appropriate that [the emperor] personally composed a record for the Guanyin Hall and inscribed it on stone in the imperial hand.
