51.32

唐德宗。京兆尹宇文炫。乞以廢寺為學舍材。勅不許○勅寺觀嚴潔。不得容外客居住○宣宗裴休言。寺觀多為官僚寓客蹂踐。詔今後不得在寺居止。

Under Emperor Dezong of the Tang, Yuwen Xuan, Governor of the Capital, requested that abandoned monasteries be dismantled for schoolhouse lumber, but an edict refused permission. He decreed that Buddhist monasteries and Daoist abbeys be strictly clean and not allow outside guests to lodge there. Under Xuanzong, Pei Xiu reported that monasteries and abbeys were frequently trampled over by bureaucratic travelers; an edict banned them from residing in monasteries from then on.
