梁武帝大通元年。菩提達磨汎海至廣州。詔入見。問如何是聖諦第一義。師云。廓然無聖。帝曰。對朕者誰。師云。不識。帝不契。師渡江入魏。

In the first year of Datong under Emperor Wu of the Liang, Bodhidharma sailed across the sea to Guangzhou, and was summoned by imperial order to an audience. [The Emperor] asked, "What is the primary truth of the sacred teachings?" The Master said, "Vast emptiness, nothing holy." The Emperor said, "Who is facing Us?" The Master said, "I do not know." The Emperor did not grasp it. The Master crossed the Yangzi River and entered the Wei.
