Under Emperor Taizong of the Tang: The Fourth Patriarch Daoxin dwelt on Mount Huangmei. He was summoned four times but did not arise. ○ When the Fourth Patriarch dwelt on Mount Potou, there was an old monk known as the Pine-planting Practitioner, who was reborn through a daughter of the Zhou clan. Seeing him, the Fourth Patriarch had him leave home; this was Hongren. ○ The Fourth Patriarch gazed toward Mount Potou: purple vapor was like a canopy, beneath which white vapor divided laterally into six paths. Hongren said, "Could it be that one day the Upādhyāya will laterally branch forth a lineage of the Buddha-Dharma?" The Patriarch said, "It is so." ○ Under Emperor Gaozong: The Fifth Patriarch Hongren saw that the postulant Huineng had written a verse on the wall. He summoned Neng at night and told him: "The Buddhas have transmitted the Treasury of the Eye of the True Dharma from one to another. I now transmit it to you, together with the transmitted kāṣāya to serve as a token of faith." Neng journeyed south throughout the night. Senior Monk Ming pursued him as far as Dayu Ridge. Neng threw the robe and bowl onto a rock; Ming tried to lift them, but they could not be moved (and so forth). ○ Under Emperor Gaozong: Chan Master Rong of Niutou attained the Dharma under the Fifth Patriarch, fulfilling the prophecy of laterally branching forth a lineage of the Buddha-Dharma. ○ Huineng arrived in Guangzhou and met Chan Master Yinzong, who shaved his head and gave him the precepts. He opened wide the Dharma gate of Dongshan. The next year he returned to Caoxi. ○ Under Emperor Zhongzong: An envoy was dispatched to welcome the Sixth Patriarch to enter the capital to practice the Way; he submitted a memorial declining on grounds of illness. ○ Under Emperor Suzong: An imperial decree dispatched an envoy to Shaozhou to welcome the Sixth Patriarch's robe and bowl into the inner palace to receive offerings. ○ Under Emperor Daizong: The Emperor dreamed that the Sixth Patriarch asked for the robe and bowl to be returned to the mountain, so he decreed that Liu Jing carry them reverently upon his head to deliver them back. ○ An edict summoned National Teacher Zhong to an audience. He asked the hermit of Mount Taibai, who knew the mountains and the earth, knew writing, and was skilled in calculation (and so forth). ○ Under Emperor Xianzong: Li Bo, the prefect of Jiangzhou, asked Chan Master Guizong Chang, "What is the meaning of a mustard seed containing Mount Sumeru?" (and so forth). ○ The lay practitioner Pang Yun asked Mazu, "Who is the person who does not keep company with the ten thousand dharmas?" (and so forth). ○ Layman Pang said to Yu Di, the regional governor, "I only wish to empty all that exists, and beware of taking as real all that does not." ○ Chan Master Baizhang Hai first established a Chan monastery, titled the abbot 'Elder', ascended the hall and took the high seat, with host and guest exchanging questions and answers (and so forth). Later generations expanded this under the name *Chanyuan qinggui* (Rules of Purity for the Chan Monastery). ○ Under Emperor Muzong: Vice Minister Bai Juyi visited Guizong, finding the master plastering a wall (and so forth). ○ When Bai Juyi governed Hangzhou, he inquired about the Way from Chan Master Niaoke (and so forth). ○ Under Emperor Wenzong: Surveillance Commissioner Lu Gen invited Nanquan into the commandery to inquire about the Way (and so forth). ○ Under Emperor Xuanzong: An imperial decree summoned Chan Master Qi'an of Yanguan with the rites due to a teacher; he firmly declined. ○ He summoned Chan Master Hongbian to an audience to inquire about the Way. ○ Under Emperor Yizong: Chan Master Xuefeng Cun dwelt in the mountains for forty years; his Dharma assembly was foremost under heaven (and so forth). ○ Under Emperor Zhaozong: Chan Master Yangshan Ji received the Dharma from Guishan; the world called it the Guiyang school. ○ The Prince of Zhao visited Chan Master Zhaozhou Shen (and so forth).
