Regarding the White Cloud Vegetarians: During the Daguan era of Emperor Huizong, monk Kong Qingjue of Baoying Monastery in the Western Capital resided at the White Cloud Hermitage in Hangzhou; he established the Four Fruits and Ten Stages, composed several treatises, and taught them to the common populace; they were also called the Ten Stages Vegetarians. Chan Master Juehai Yu refuted them; the authorities banished him to Enzhou. In the second year of the Jiatai era, Shen Zhiyuan of the White Cloud Hermitage called himself a "Person of the Way" and submitted a petition requesting an official plaque. Officials stated: "'Persons of the Way' eat vegetables and serve demons; they are what are called treacherous people. Being neither monks, Daoists, nor postulants, they cultivate their own factions and bands by the hundreds and thousands, harboring the Zoroastrian teaching to deafen and blind the foolish rabble; or under the guise of repairing bridges and paving roads, they levy and extort commoners' wealth, founding private hermitages that become sinks of refuge for fugitives. We beg that Zhiyuan be permanently banished to a remote region, and the hermitage buildings be torn down to serve as a warning against the transmission and practice of demonic methods." The memorial was approved.
