In the eleventh year of the Zhenguan era of Emperor Taizong of the Tang, according to the former institution for the Shidian sacrifices, the Duke of Zhou was the Former Sage and Confucius was the Former Teacher. At this time, Fang Xuanling submitted a proposal requesting that Confucius be made the Former Sage and that Master Yan [Hui] be the Former Teacher accompanying him in receiving offerings; an imperial edict approved this. Emperor Gaozong visited Lu, sacrificed to Confucius, and posthumously enfeoffed him as Grand Preceptor (Taishi). Empress Wu posthumously enfeoffed Confucius as Duke Longdao. In the twenty-seventh year of the Kaiyuan era of Emperor Xuanzong, Confucius was posthumously enfeoffed as King Wenxuan, seated facing south, and his disciples were enfeoffed as dukes, marquises, and earls.
