北周武帝。詔群臣沙門道士。於內殿博議三教。法猛法師立論理勝。司隷大夫甄鸞上笑道論三十六篇。隋客問三教優劣。李士謙曰。佛日也。道月也。儒五星也。

Emperor Wu of the Northern Zhou decreed that the assembled officials, monks, and Daoists extensively debate the Three Teachings in the inner palace; Dharma Master Fameng's thesis prevailed in principle. Grandee of the Metropolitan Commandant Zhen Luan submitted thirty-six chapters of the *Laughing at the Dao Treatise*. Under the Sui, when a guest asked about the merits of the Three Teachings, Li Shiqian said: "The Buddha is the sun, the Dao is the moon, and Confucianism is the five planets."
