Dhyāna Master Faxiang was a native of Yangzhou. At the age of sixteen, he bid farewell to his parents, entered the Way, and studied under the Master of Wisdom. Having recited and mastered the Lotus Sūtra, he then erected a Lotus Hall beside Qixia Monastery. Practicing the samādhi, he attained realization, keeping silent and saying nothing. Fierce tigers in the mountains were killing several people every day. The community held a great vegetarian feast as an apotropaic ritual. Suddenly, a tiger was seen rushing into the gathering and seizing a person away. The master called out in a loud voice: 'Today this feast was prepared specially for you; release this person!' The tiger at once laid the person down and retreated. Shortly thereafter, several tens of tigers gathered in a large group at the feast ground, and the entire assembly fled in terror. The master walked before the tigers, tapped their necks with his staff, and expounded the Dharma to them. From then on, they fled far away without a trace.
