Dhyāna Master Xingjian was personally tonsured by the Master of Wisdom. Receiving the meditation teachings, he constantly sat and never lay down. While the Master of Wisdom was at Yuquan, he sent him to Lizhou to convert and transform beings. On his return journey with ploughing oxen, he suddenly encountered a band of brigands, who severed the master’s head, seized the oxen, and fled. The master's corpse then rose up from the ground, grasped his head in his hands, placed it upon his neck, and pursued the band of robbers with flying strides. The robbers were all astonished and terrified, whereupon they returned his oxen, vowing to become his slaves for life to beg forgiveness for their transgression. Among the tenant slaves on the monastic estate today, those surnamed Xiang are their descendants.
