Wang Gu, courtesy name Zijian, served as Palace Attendant at the beginning of the Guangda era of the Chen and was promoted to Jinzi Grand Master for Splendid Happiness. Throughout his life he never ate meat; by night he sat in meditation, and by day he chanted Buddhist scriptures. He once went on an embassy to the Wei. During a banquet, he requested that the slaughter of a sheep be halted; the sheep came before Gu and knelt down as if giving thanks. Furthermore, at a banquet by Lake Kunming, because southerners relish fish, the Wei set out many large nets; Gu restrained them with the Buddha-Dharma, and not a single scale was caught. When the Great Master lectured on the Lotus at Waguan, Gu joined the Dharma assembly; he was awakened upon his very seat, appearing just like one who had studied it in past lives.
