柳顧言。法名正善。河東人。晉王初受菩薩戒。遣顧言送智者施物。及屢奉王教。往留智者。頻聞法要深有省發。智者回自江陵。晉王重乞稟受禪法。師為著淨名義疏初卷。顧言與徐陵奉酬文義。後智者續成玄義十卷。顧言報曰。持往仁壽宮。服讀八遍。粗疑略盡。細闇難除。新治六卷。并入文八軸。為莊治未竟。少日鑽研。今遣使人蕭通國參承書意。自當仰簡。顧言頻被顧問。每答以大師必來。願在夏竟。便事舟楫。冀此殘年盡心聽受。懺悔往日懈惰之咎。大業元年冬。煬帝勅顧言。為智者建碑於天台國清。主文尚理。人服其工。官至儀同三司。

Liu Guyan, Dharma name Zhengshan, was a native of Hedong. When the Prince of Jin first received the bodhisattva precepts, he sent Guyan to deliver offerings to Zhiyi. Guyan repeatedly received the prince's commands to detain Zhiyi; hearing the essentials of the Dharma frequently, he was profoundly awakened. When Zhiyi returned from Jiangling, the Prince of Jin again begged to receive the teachings on meditation; the master composed the first fascicle of the Commentary on the Vimalakīrti-nirdeśa for him, and Guyan and Xu Ling attended to the text and doctrinal meaning. Later, Zhiyi composed the profound meaning in ten fascicles; Guyan reported back, saying: 'I carried it to the Renshou Palace and read it devotedly eight times. Gross doubts have mostly been resolved, but subtle obscurities are hard to dispel. Six fascicles have been newly edited and combined into eight scrolls of text; because their polishing is not yet complete, I have delved into them for a few days. Now I send the envoy Xiao Tongguo to convey the meaning of this letter; you will surely examine it with favor.' Guyan was frequently questioned by the prince, and each time he replied: 'The Great Master will certainly come. It is hoped that once the summer is over, he will immediately prepare his boat. I hope in these remaining years to listen and receive it with all my heart, and to repent of my past faults of indolence.' In the winter of the first year of the Daye era, Emperor Yang commanded Guyan to erect a stele for Zhiyi at Guoqing [Monastery] on Mount Tiantai. The composition was masterful and valued principle, and people admired its craft. His office reached Equal to the Three Excellencies.
