諸祖前列所以明正統也。至若旁出法嗣。自南岳照禪師之下。皆足以光昭法運力扶宗門。誘掖來機扞禦外務（扞音汗抵也。禦音語止也。務侮同）摭言行之要。考師弟之緣。撰歷代諸祖旁出世家。南岳旁出世家（二世）

The main line of the various patriarchs was set forth earlier in order to clarify the orthodox transmission. As for collateral Dharma heirs, from Chan Master Zhao of Nanyue downward, all were sufficient to illuminate the Dharma's fortune, strongly uphold the ancestral gate, guide future capacities, and ward off external affronts. Gathering the essentials of their words and deeds, and examining the karmic ties between masters and disciples, I have composed the Hereditary Houses of the Collateral Branches of the Successive Patriarchs.
