Dharma Master Zaisheng was a native of Kuaiji, styled Shenzhi. He studied for a long time under Mingzhi; his contemporaries praised his excellence in preaching. Prior to this, when King Qian Wusu commanded Hangzhou, he once suffered from an eye ailment. At night he dreamed of an immortal in plain clothes who said he came from Yongjia. The next morning, a monk from Yongjia submitted a petition wishing to present an image of Guanyin, saying he had obtained it from the ocean tide; when various mountains tried to welcome it, they could not lift it. Thereupon it manifested in a dream wishing to return to Yuecheng. Wusu immediately prepared full regalia to welcome it; upon seeing the image, his eyes immediately regained their sight. He then founded a hermitage named Xingfu to venerate it. The seated image was six feet tall, with a wondrous and imposing Sanskrit countenance; viewing it from afar amid the lamps at night, it seemed like a living person. During the Yuanyou era, when the Master came to reside at Xingfu, Lord Qingxian was the commander. There was a great drought and pestilence, and long prayers were without response. He thereupon dismissed the various sacrifices and asked the Master to welcome the image into the prefectural office. After one night of sincere prayer, sweet rain poured down, and the pestilence also subsided. The Lord submitted a memorial to the court, which granted the Master the title Shenzhi and named the hermitage Yuantong. (Below this, one person is missing from the basic annals).
