Transmitting the Way indeed relies upon the mind, not upon external traces. Yet when discussing the mutual reception and transmission between patriarch and patriarch, one must cause people to follow the traces and only then know the mind. If one can know the mind, why must one discard the traces? If so, what are these traces? Are they not that there is doctrine to serve as exposition, and contemplation to serve as practice? Practice must accord with exposition, and exposition must accord with practice. When exposition and practice accord with their traces, only then is it wondrous. Therefore it is said: expounding what is practiced within one's own mind—these are the traces of transmitting the Way. Knowing the traces, one must know the mind; knowing the mind, one must know the Way. Because of knowing the Way, one may thereafter discuss the mutual reception and transmission between patriarch and patriarch. Thus I have composed the Lineage Chart of the Buddhas and Patriarchs.
