Treatise 11: The Doctrinal Texts of the Mountain School
25.3
Zhiyi ascended the high seat to give free rein to eloquence, and Zhāng'ān set his brush upright to record it in writings. As for what is called 'expanding the primary truth by means of writing', this was still entrusted to mere words; it is not as profoundly incisive and clearly evident as recording it through actual events. Jīngxī remarked: 'Texts are gates; using texts to penetrate their principle—how is that not a gate?' When it came to later generations elaborating the patriarchal path, their brilliant treatises emerged: though they each offered doctrinal compositions and alternately affirmed or refuted each other, in their sincerity of returning to the lineage they were in no way different. Now therefore, their titles are set forth side by side, so as to bequeath them to the inquiries of those who esteem antiquity. Thus is composed the Treatise on the Doctrinal Texts of the Mountain School.

25.5
Mahāyāna Śamatha-Vipaśyanā (Two fascicles)
25.6
At the end of the Tang, doctrinal texts were scattered and lost overseas. In the third year of the Xianping reign period of the present dynasty, Jakuchō of the state of Japan brought this copy to Siming. Ciyun obtained it and wrote a preface for it, stating: 'The first fascicle opens the understanding of śamatha-vipaśyanā; the second fascicle demonstrates the practice of śamatha-vipaśyanā.'
25.7
The Gate of the Forty-Two Syllables (Two fascicles) (The forty-two syllables of the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā Prajñāpāramitā, starting with A and ending with Ṭha; Nanyue used them to correlate with the forty-two stages.)
25.8
The Meaning of the Practices of Ease and Delight (One fascicle) (Xingjiao of Siming traveled on pilgrimage to Fuyan at Nanyue and obtained this text from the canon. Upon returning, he presented it to Yuanbian. Later, Beifeng Shizhi was the first to carve the printing blocks for it.)
25.9
Vow of Nanyue (One fascicle); The Gate of Non-Contentious Practice (Two fascicles); The Gradual Meditation Essentials for the Contemplation Gates of the Threefold Wisdom.
25.10
*Profound Meaning of the Treatise [on the Great Perfection of Wisdom]* (the above each in one fascicle). The preceding *Cessation and Contemplation*, *Meaning of the Practice of Peace and Joy*, and *Vow Text* have extant copies; the rest are no longer seen, which is regrettable indeed.
25.11
Tiantai [Zhiyi]:
25.12
*Profound Meaning of the Lotus Sūtra* (ten fascicles); *Words and Phrases of the Lotus Sūtra* (ten fascicles); *Great Cessation and Contemplation* (ten fascicles, entitled *Perfect and Sudden Cessation and Contemplation*); *Dhyāna-pāramitā* (ten fascicles, entitled *Gradual Cessation and Contemplation*);
25.13
*Six Wondrous Dharma Gates for Cultivating Dhyāna* (one fascicle, entitled *Indeterminate Cessation and Contemplation*; composed by the Master of Wisdom [Zhiyi] for Mao Xi, Director of the Department of State Affairs under the Chen dynasty); *Profound Meaning of the Golden Light Sūtra* (one fascicle; an exegesis of the separate four-fascicle edition translated by Dharmakṣema);
25.14
*Words and Phrases of the Golden Light Sūtra* (three fascicles); *Commentary on the Bodhisattva Precepts* (two fascicles); *Profound Meaning of the Separate Circulation of the Guanyin Sūtra* (two fascicles; an exegesis of the 'Universal Gate' Chapter of the *Lotus Sūtra* circulating separately outside the main scripture; in the past, Dharmakṣema exhorted the King of Hexi to chant and uphold it to heal illness, so the Master of Wisdom specially commented on it); *Subcommentary on the Separate Circulation of the Guanyin Sūtra* (five fascicles); *Commentary on the Sūtra on Invoking Avalokiteśvara* (one fascicle);
25.15
*Commentary on the Sūtra on the Contemplation of the Buddha of Immeasurable Life* (one fascicle); *Treatise on Contemplating the Mind* (one fascicle); *Commentary on the Diamond Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra* (one fascicle; in the second year of Jianyan, Xiuwu of Wulin incorporated this commentary into the sūtra as glosses; in the first year of Xiantun, Xingjing and others of Nanhu had the sūtra together with the commentary in the outline division of the Tiantai Falunyuan carved on printing blocks at their monastery); *Four Applications of Mindfulness* (four fascicles);
25.16
*Subcommentary on the Amitābha Sūtra* (one fascicle; although the two commentaries on the *Diamond* and the *Amitābha* were once entered into the canon, Jingjue of Gushan considered them apocryphal texts; only Dharma Master Shenzhao once used this commentary for lectures at Falun, and an imperially bestowed copy exists in the Dongshan canon);
25.17
*Oral Instructions on the Gate of Dhyāna* (one fascicle); *Samādhi of Awakening Thought* (one fascicle, composed personally by the Master of Wisdom); *Rites of the Vaipulya Samādhi* (one fascicle); *Rites of the Lotus Samādhi* (one fascicle);
25.18
*Sequence of the Dharmadhātu* (three fascicles; the above were all composed personally); *Profound Commentary on the Vimalakīrti Sūtra* (six fascicles); *Meaning of the Fourfold Teachings* (four fascicles; text extracted from the *Profound Commentary on the Vimalakīrti Sūtra*).
25.19
The above seventy-six fascicles were submitted by Ciyun in the second year of Tiansheng to be entered into the Great Canon.
25.20
*Textual Commentary on the Vimalakīrti Sūtra* (twenty-eight fascicles, composed for Emperor Yang; Jīngxī abridged it into ten fascicles, merely titled the *Abridged Commentary*, circulating separately alongside the earlier *Profound Commentary*); *Treatise on the Ten Doubts Concerning the Pure Land*;
25.21
*Method of Contemplating the Mind while Eating*; *Method of Contemplating the Mind while Reciting Sūtras*; *Meaning of the Twelvefold Canon Contemplated by the Mind*; *Lesser Cessation and Contemplation* (composed personally by the Master of Wisdom for his brother, Officer Chen Zhen).
25.22
The above, totaling thirty-three fascicles, have not been entered into the canon.
25.23
*Commentary on the Treatise on the Great Perfection of Wisdom* (twenty fascicles); *Commentary on the Sūtra on Maitreya Achieving Buddhahood* (five fascicles); *Exegesis of the Meaning of All Sūtras Through Contemplation of the Mind* (one fascicle); *Commentary on the Sūtra on Maitreya's Rebirth Above* (one fascicle);
25.24
*Profound Meaning Expounding One Sūtra* (one fascicle); *Cessation and Contemplation in Seated Meditation* (one fascicle); *Commentary on the Benevolent Kings Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra* (two fascicles; the *Separate Collection of Tianzhu* states it was obtained from maritime merchants at the beginning of Yuanfeng); *Chapters on the Gate of Dhyāna*; *Pratyutpanna Practice*; *Miscellaneous Contemplative Practices*;
25.25
*Major Essentials of Entering the Path*; *Five Expedient Gates*; *Meaning of the Seven Expedients*; *Meaning of the Seven Types of Learners*;
25.26
*Meaning of the One, Two, Three, and Four Bodies*; *Rituals of the Dharma Gate*; *Essential Summary of the Gate of Dhyāna* (the above each in one fascicle).
25.27
Of the above forty-one fascicles, the texts are missing.
25.28
Ciyun's *Catalogue of Following Cases* states: 'As for the *Profound Meaning of the Lotus Sūtra*, it exclusively explains the opening title, universally clarifying the five periods and extensively discerning the eight teachings; the great purport of the [Buddha's] appearance in the world is contained within it. As for the *Words and Phrases*, it divides the sūtra text by sentences into sections. Jīngxī says: "Because the explanation of the title details the great purport exhaustively, upon reaching the scripture text, it merely divides the chapters and sections in broad terms." Following each work there are Jīngxī's notes, just like the *Orthodox Meaning* for the Five Classics. As for *Cessation and Contemplation*, it is another name for concentration and wisdom, the practical gateway of the *Lotus Sūtra*. The previous *Profound Meaning* and *Words and Phrases* both clarify the matter of those suited to the teaching receiving benefit during the Buddha's lifetime; even if there are passages on contemplating the mind by lodging the matter in accord with dharma, they are not the central purport of the work. The present *Cessation and Contemplation* is precisely the Master of Wisdom expounding the path of dharma practiced in his own mind; self-cultivated causes and effects, and the capacity and objects for transforming others, are all fully present.' Jīngxī explained it with the *Fuxing*. The catalogue states: 'Our school has three kinds of cessation and contemplation: the first is called gradual, meaning understanding is sudden while practice is gradual, which is the *Dhyāna-pāramitā*; the second is called indeterminate, meaning understanding is sudden while practice is either sudden or gradual, which is the *Six Wondrous Dharma Gates*; the third is called perfect and sudden, meaning understanding and practice are both sudden, which is the *Great Cessation and Contemplation*. These three cessation and contemplations address differing capacities; though their forms of practice differ, they all take the perfect principle as their fundamental basis. Liang Su of the Tang abridged *Cessation and Contemplation* into six fascicles; although the text is concise and essential, its aspects of cultivation lack much, which readers should know. Except for those written in the Master of Wisdom's own hand, the rest were all compiled as commentaries and treatises by Zhāng'ān beneath the wheel of the Dharma.' The 'Treatise on Arts and Literature' in the *Book of Tang* states: 'Guanding's private record of the Master of Wisdom's words and purport, one fascicle; record of meanings, one fascicle.' Now it is unclear what texts these are. The *Shīqiān* states: 'For *Cessation and Contemplation*, the *Gate of Dhyāna*, the *Vimalakīrti Commentary*, and so on, there are remaining portions that were not finished being spoken.' Note: *Cessation and Contemplation* states that the Master of Wisdom expounded it at Yuquan Monastery for one summer, bestowing compassionate rain at the two times; although his joy in speaking was inexhaustible, just as he reached the contemplation of views, the turning of the wheel of the Dharma stopped, and the latter portion was not delivered. The *Fuxing* states: 'The seventh major chapter is divided into ten realms; upon reaching the seventh realm, the rest was not delivered again. The latter three major chapters and the remaining three realms were discontinued here because time pressed close to the end of summer' (this explains *Cessation and Contemplation*). The *Gradual Gate of Dhyāna*, namely the *Dhyāna-pāramitā*, also arranges ten major chapters; in the text of the sixth expedient, an annotation says: 'If discussing the profound and wondrous realms that arise through various dhyāna-concentrations after the first dhyāna, they are all explained in the seventh, Cultivation and Realization.' None of these texts circulated (this explains the *Gate of Dhyāna*). Of the fourteen chapters of the *Vimalakīrti Sūtra*, the Great Master's commentary stopped at the eighth chapter, the 'Buddha Path Chapter'; the commentaries on the subsequent chapters were composed and continued by Zhāng'ān (this explains the *Vimalakīrti*, as seen in the *Supplementary Notes*).
