Zhiyi ascended the high seat to give free rein to eloquence, and Zhāng'ān set his brush upright to record it in writings. As for what is called 'expanding the primary truth by means of writing', this was still entrusted to mere words; it is not as profoundly incisive and clearly evident as recording it through actual events. Jīngxī remarked: 'Texts are gates; using texts to penetrate their principle—how is that not a gate?' When it came to later generations elaborating the patriarchal path, their brilliant treatises emerged: though they each offered doctrinal compositions and alternately affirmed or refuted each other, in their sincerity of returning to the lineage they were in no way different. Now therefore, their titles are set forth side by side, so as to bequeath them to the inquiries of those who esteem antiquity. Thus is composed the Treatise on the Doctrinal Texts of the Mountain School.
