Xie Lingyun: His grandfather Xie Xuan had rendered distinguished service to the Jin court, and Lingyun was the grandson of the Duke of Kangle. He inherited the enfeoffment as Duke of Kangle. His literary works were foremost east of the river (this should be west of the river, referring to Jinling). He used to wear wooden clogs: when climbing a mountain, he would remove the front pegs, and when descending, he would remove the rear pegs. Seeking out mountains and ascending peaks, he invariably reached secluded, precipitous heights. Upon arriving at Mount Lu, as soon as he saw Master Huiyuan, he felt deep awe and bowed his mind in submission. Thereupon, he constructed a terrace at the temple to translate the Nirvāṇa Sūtra, and excavated a pond to plant white lotuses. At that time, Master Huiyuan and the eminent gentlemen were cultivating the pure land practices together, and it was therefore named the White Lotus Society (some say these were two ponds, eastern and western). Lingyun once sought to enter the society, but Master Huiyuan prevented him because his mind was too dissipated.
