Huaiyu was a native of Danqiu. He contemplated the Pure Land for nearly forty years, daily reciting the Buddha's name fifty thousand times, and chanted the various Pure Land sūtras a total of three million times. One day, he saw the holy assembly of the Western Land arriving, holding up a silver dais. The master said, 'According to my original aspiration, I must obtain a golden dais!' As soon as the words were spoken, the dais vanished. The master redoubled his austere practice. After three times seven days, the person from before returned and said, 'The Dharma master has attained birth of the highest grade.' Suddenly an extraordinary light illuminated his room. Three days later, he wrote a gāthā: / 'Pure, luminous, and free of defilement, / I take the lotus transformation as my parents. / I have practiced the Way through ten kalpas, / Manifesting in Jambudvīpa, weary of all suffering. / A single lifetime of austerities surpasses ten kalpas; / Forever leaving Sahā, I return to the Pure Land.' / His disciples saw the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas riding together on a golden dais, descending from the west to welcome Huaiyu and departing.
